Akko (Acre)

Akko sea wallThe Old City of Acre is a UNESCO world heritage site. The city is at least 5,000 years old, but attractions connected with its Crusader past, and a period of resurgence during the Ottoman era, are what attract so many visitors today.

Here we’ll explore an underground complex of halls built and used by the Hospitaller knights. During the Crusader period, they provided facilities for pilgrims making their way to Jerusalem.

We’ll also see a Turkish bathhouse and a host of other impressive structures from the time of Akko’s renaissance during the rule of Ahmed al-Jazzar Pasha. And at the Akko fortress, we’ll learn about the largest prison break in history and a major scene of Israel’s struggle for independence.
