Mount Tabor – Church of the Transfiguration

According to Christian tradition, Mount Tabor is one of the possible sites of the Transfiguration of Christ. The current church was built on the ruins of an ancient Byzantine church and a 12th century Crusader church. The view of the Jezreel Valley from here is spectacular.

Mount Tabor is first mentioned in the Hebrew Bible in connection with the defeat of the army of the king of Hazor by the prophetess Deborah and Barak. It was here that the Canaanite chariots swept across the Jezreel Valley, but a sudden downpour bogged them near the foot of Mount Tabor, holding them for the Israelite charge from the mountain.
