Old Jaffa

Old Jaffa Ancient Port CityTechnically speaking, Old Jaffa today is a part of the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo. But Jaffa couldn’t be more different than Tel Aviv. With a natural harbor and an ancient city settled as early as the Bronze Age, “Yafo” as it’s called in Hebrew is a place full of history. Its ancient rulers included Egyptians, Canaanites, Philistines, Assyrians, Babylonians, and Romans. Later on Arab, Crusaders and Ottoman Turks ruled here.

According to the New Testament, Peter resurrected the widow Tabitha in Jaffa. And it was here that he had vision in which he is told not to distinguish between Jew and Gentile.

In more recent times, Yafo became the “port of Jerusalem”. Through its natural harbor Christian pilgrims from Europe arrived in the Holy Land. And it was here that the Jewish pioneers of the first aliyot (waves of Zionist immigration) arrived in David’s Land, determined to create a new society.
